DESCRIPTION:Open Nights are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9pm-10:30pm\, June 14-August 30. \nDue to COVID-19 safety protocols\, Open Nights in 2021 will have limited capacity and different viewing abilities. Masks are required. \nJoin our professional astronomers for an impressive tour of Nantucket’s night sky. Our staff will assist you and answer questions while you view the wonders of the night sky through up to three different telescopes\, including our historic 8-inch Alvan Clark refractor and our modern 24-inch research telescope. Get a chance to view the Moon\, planets\, bright stars\, nebulae\, and even other galaxies! Learn about the cutting-edge research being conducted by Maria Mitchell Observatory astronomers and interns. The presentation will end with a constellation tour outside on the observatory deck.  \nPrograms take place at 59 Milk Street Extension and are weather permitting.

SUMMARY:Gitanjali Rao - TIME Kid of the Year: Gitanjali Rao
DESCRIPTION:Gitanjali Rao was recognized as America’s Top Young Scientist and received an EPA Presidential award for inventing her device “Tethys”—an early lead detection tool. Rao is also the inventor of “Epione”—a device for early diagnosis of prescription opioid addiction using genetic engineering\, and “Kindly”—an anti-cyberbullying service using AI and Natural Language processing. \nRao was honored as Forbes “30 Under 30 in Science” in 2019 and TIME’s “Top Young Innovator” and “TIME Kid of the Year” for her innovations and STEM workshops she conducts globally\, which has inspired over 46\,000 students in the last two years across four continents. In her sessions\, she shares her own process of innovation that can be used by students all over the world. She is an experienced TED speaker and often presents in global and corporate forums on innovation and the importance of STEM. \n  \nRao is the author of the book “Young Innovator’s Guide to STEM”\, which guides students\, educators\, or teachers with a prescribed 5 step innovation process.

DESCRIPTION:Nantucket is an excellent place for learning more about trees\, with its diversity of native\, introduced\, and domestic species. Getting started can be difficult if you don’t know what to look for. Join Dan Souza\, MMA’s Museum Manager\, on a low-difficulty walk around the MMA campus and Mill Hill. We will learn about the importance of trees in local ecosystems\, adaptations of native species\, and we will identify various species along the way! \nThis program is designed to be appropriate for ages 8 and up. SUMMARY:Maria Mitchell Association Open Telescope Night
DESCRIPTION:Open Nights are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9pm-10:30pm\, June 14-August 30. \nDue to COVID-19 safety protocols\, Open Nights in 2021 will have limited capacity and different viewing abilities. Masks are required. \nJoin our professional astronomers for an impressive tour of Nantucket’s night sky. Our staff will assist you and answer questions while you view the wonders of the night sky through up to three different telescopes\, including our historic 8-inch Alvan Clark refractor and our modern 24-inch research telescope. Get a chance to view the Moon\, planets\, bright stars\, nebulae\, and even other galaxies! Learn about the cutting-edge research being conducted by Maria Mitchell Observatory astronomers and interns. The presentation will end with a constellation tour outside on the observatory deck.  \nPrograms take place at 59 Milk Street Extension and are weather permitting.
